Today, Canon Inc. released two press releases stating that they have had Amazon remove over 1,000 listings of third-party laser printer toner cartridges, as Canon believe that these cartridges infringed on various patents they hold.
Canon removed these listings through reporting to Amazon through Amazon’s reporting tool, which allows vendors to report other listings which they believe to be problematic in one way or another. Canon acknowledges that although the listings were removed, “[this] does not encompass any official finding of validity or infringement of a patent”.
Canon also stated, “Canon respects the intellectual property rights of others and will continue to enforce its own intellectual property rights.”
In Europe, Canon assisted Amazon in removing 872 listings from Amazon in Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland and Belgium. As for Canada, Mexico and the USA, Canon removed 172 listings.
